Many Kinds

Many Kinds is my largest watercolour so far. The painting brings together many different breeds of chickens — colourful, spotted, silky, crested, buff and everything in between.
At the centre, two hens stay with their chicks, with two more small families nearby.
I wasn’t sure if I could handle such a large format when I started this painting. It was a little intimidating at first, but as the chickens slowly filled the paper, I became more confident and really enjoyed the process.
I made this work after returning from Ukraine, full of energy and ideas.
I’m very happy with the result and with what this large format allowed me to do.
