I often see pigeons around the city, wandering along rooftops, puffing up their feathers, and standing in funny, unexpected poses. I find myself watching them more and more. There is something about their relaxed behaviour and the way they carry themselves that makes me want to paint them. In this painting, I brought together seven pigeons, each with its own posture and character. I especially enjoy the colours in their feathers — the subtle greys, purples, greens, and blues that come together in such a sophisticated way. My work begins with observation. I paint what I see, finding subjects in everyday urban life that I might once have passed without noticing.
